As of Tuesday, April 6, 2010, Pennsylvania Congressman, Chaka Fattah (Dem. 2nd Dist.) has pledged to introduce the legislation that will be required for the award of a Congressional Gold Medal to the United States Colored Troops of the American Civil War. Many Members of Congress are unaware of the military contribution made by the USCT, in the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation and the military victories that led to winning the Civil War by the Union army

Given the recent declaration by the Governor of Virginia about the Civil War as well as other attempts to rewrite American history, it is evident that there will need to be a concerted effort on the part of the USCT network to work together to honor our ancestors.

This is the first step in the national campaign to have the United States Colored Troops awarded a Congressional Gold Medal for the role they played in the abolition of slavery and the preservation of the Union during the American Civil War. The Descendants Jubilee Project and the African-American Civil War Memorial Museum and Foundation are working to develop a legislative support base for this important honor.

Dr.  Frank Smith, founder and director of the African American Civil War Memorial Museum,  has agreed to collaborate and make this project a top priority of the USCT national network.  Together we must all contact Members of Congress for their legislative support in awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to the USCT.  This will not be easy to do, especially with the escalating shrillness of the negative and somewhat racist rehtoric that we are beginning to hear more of every day.

We need your help!

Please identify any member of Congress whom you believe should be contacted for support. As soon as the legislation is drafted, we will begin to notify potential congressional supporters and encourage sponsorship and co-sponsorship.  We will be developing a communications plan that will keep our USCT /Congressional Gold Medal campaign front and center. During the life of this effort we will also be helping to raise funds in order to recruit, equip and train new USCT participants either in existing or in newly formed units. This must be done in time for our role in the Sesquicentennial commemorations 2013-2015. Please contact us through the Descendants Jubilee Project at www.descendantsjubileeproject.com  Use the contact page. Thank you.
